Wicker and rattan are two types of furniture that bring a natural vibe to your home and fit in well with modern and boho interiors. While often associated with the 70s, these woven furniture styles are back in style in a big way. Our collection of wicker and rattan furniture can introduce this trend to your interior.

But what is the difference between rattan and wicker, and which is right for your room? The words wicker and rattan are often used interchangeably, which can cause some confusion. We explore what makes them different and how you can make them work in your home.

What Is the Difference Between Wicker and Rattan?

The main difference between rattan and wicker is that rattan is a material, while wicker is a style of weaving. Rattan furniture will be made from rattan, a material derived from palm plants, while wicker furniture is woven from natural or synthetic materials, including rattan, bamboo, and reeds.

Therefore, wicker and rattan can be similar or different depending on the material used in the wicker furniture. A wicker item made from rattan will offer the same benefits as a rattan item, while a wicker item made from bamboo or reeds may have different weight, cleaning requirements and uses when compared to a piece of rattan furniture.

What is Rattan?

Rattan is an Old World climbing palm, of which there are around 600 species in the world. It is most commonly sourced in Indonesia, as well as other South Asian countries.

Rattan can be stained or painted like wood, making it a fantastic material for crafting furniture and homeware. Plus, the material is strong, durable, flexible and lightweight, while looking great, so it’s easy to see why this is such a popular choice for furniture.

Natural Rattan vs Synthetic Rattan

While natural materials are often a preferred choice, there are some instances where choosing synthetic rattan may be preferable. Natural rattan should be used as an indoor material; however, rattan-style furniture is on-trend as garden furniture, where it can be beneficial to have synthetic rattan for an all-weather safe alternative.

What Is Wicker?

Wicker is an ancient weaving technique with roots tracing back to Ancient Egypt, where wickerwork was made from reeds, and swamp grasses were crafted and have since been found in Pharaohs' tombs.

Over time, wicker became increasingly popular in Europe, and with rattan imported from Asia, more durable furniture was crafted in this style.

Now, wicker furniture is created with natural materials like rattan, bamboo, reed, and willow, as well as synthetic materials like resin and vinyl.
